What's the origin of TAM?
Hey everyone, now that I've been playing TAM for a while, I was wondering what's the origin of TAM? Why was the gametype created and what are the pros and cons of TAM as opposed to say, Team Deathmatch?
Thanks, Prozac

Re: What's the origin of TAM?
heya coondog,
this is only my opinion and we all know that my opinion doesn't mean a thing(just ask richard). but i believe TAM is a spinoff of TDM.
i do know this. TAM will make you weak, seriously. if you want to be a great player that is good with all the weapons, play TDM. if you want to be a great player that can learn to survive with weapons that aren't your best, play TDM.
TDM teaches you how to use your adrenaline. you learn how NOT to be overly aggressive when you're invisible. you learn how to hide like a pussy and boost your health and shield. you learn how to use your shield gun when you use your speed combo.
you learn to control powerups and throw weapons and work as a team. more importantly, throw weapons to a teamate when they need them. you learn total map control.
all these things i've mentioned you don't have to worry about in TAM because you either have every weapon when the round starts or most team minded people rez their teamates when they have adrenaline.
if you really want to get good at 2k4, spend some time playing good players who play tdm.
looks like team phoenix needs to take on prozac and a buddy.

Re: What's the origin of TAM?
I agree with Sid but also offer these thoughts:
In TAM you need to know which weapon to use in each situation because you can't just camp and pick off people who spawn.
There is less spam (more than I like but still less) because of the limited ammo.
When teams are unbalanced the game gives the lower scoring team a bit of an advantage with their starting health/shield numbers.
Back to the camping issue... you are penalized for just sitting in one place like many TDM players do when controlling a map.

Re: What's the origin of TAM?
While all of this is great info on the comparison of TAM to TDM, the posts still do not tell me why TAM was invented. Did someone just say one day, "Hey lets make a gametype where there are no pickups, and you automatically get all of your weapons and a certain amount of shield and health, etc."
I'm interested in understanding why the game originated and what is the appeal of TAM.
Any thoughts? Prozac

hey duffy, do you need one of these?
it's even shaped like a suppository for ease of use.
now back on topic...
perhaps it was created to add more life to a great game.

Re: What's the origin of TAM?
I don't think you'll find out why unless you ask the developers themselves. But, the comparisons listed above tell you how TAM is different from TDM and those differences appeal to a lot of players. Another reason might be it is simply a different way to play an old game. Many people who were bored with the other gametypes moved on to TAM. Now that TAM has been around for a while though, it's nice to go back to the others too. Think it all just comes down to personal opinion and what you want to concentrate on while playing.

Re: What's the origin of TAM?
Basically it does not make a difference cause rarely when we play we really do not play as a coordinated team. In real TDM and TAM you have peoplwe who communicate on ts or vent working as a team with everyone having a goal working against another team trying to do the same thing.
We just hop in a start blasting the other team or in Sid's case the same team. I prefer TAM as I have the rocket launcher right there to shoot at my feet and kill myself rather than running around looking for a rocket launcher to kill myself with.
Actually there was debate even among hard core TDM players where weapon stay was off or on becuase there is nothing worse than running around with teammates tha had just a assault rifle while the other team had all the big guns and health etc.
In order to play it right you have to have people that are dedicated to hours of practice
and learning each others moves.
As fior the origins of TAM it was generally credit to Hurbert B Tam who co-authored a book with Mario Pacman entitled " Great games for the computer when it is invented " back in 1904 . Both ironially died in insane asylums.
