XGL & Compiz

I just set this up on my Fedora machine:

It runs wonderfully... even on cheap hardware. The link is a demo (obviously not my desktop) and I don't endorse Novell... that was just the clearest video I saw to demonstrate what this does.

I have been talking to my bosses and looks like my next machine at work will be a Linux box. Pretty good for a Windows shop. I love Linux.

You use a distro or source?

I prefer source. I was using Linux when you had to compile almost all apps for your system. Ditrubutions are nice, but I have had lots of problems when it comes to updates vs package version and prereq's. But I enjoy many versions and I could list lots of different Linux flavors I have tried. I just took Phlax off my thumbdrive.

I am also a very big fan of FreeBSD.

I probably like Fedora (Core 5) the best but also have various versions of Suse, Gentoo, RHEL, and Mandriva running around. Even some DamnSmallLinux

I never have time to compile from source :lol:

PD I was actually telling non to switch to linux. I have considered setting that stuff up, but really I have no need for it. *shrug* I might try it one day, we will see.

You would be surprised how useful it is, especially the cubes (mutliple desktops can help you stay organized and on track when you get used to them) but the most useful feature is when you throw the mouse cursor into the top corner all the windows line up in a grid. When you click a window they all jump back to their old positions except the new one is on top. Ever alt-tab through 6 windows to find the one you want? This is so smooth and amazing when you do alt-tab you HATE IT and think it takes a life time. It never takes more then a click to get to the window you want. Its more GUI then Windows

Its not necessary... but it sure makes the desktop "feel" right.
