i've been playing it for the last two hours and all i can say is..we need to give it a chance and then decide. graphics are great, gameplay is in a word....different. many of the things we did before(as far as gameplay) still work and many don't. as far as editing the .ini file, i was looking around for that and it is different as well. however, still do-able. it looks fairly simple actually. my first impression was that the gameplay was slow compared to 2k4. i know i play with a modified FOV that makes the game feel faster, but ut3 felt slower. i did not find it difficult to see enemies on the dark map, i did however have hard time getting the mouse set at a speed where i wouldn't move too fast or too slow. this is after all only the demo.

Initial reactions?

meh...

I like new games and have no problem letting go of the old versions. I even love quake 3 which this game feels more like than UT, I think I played q3 as much as the original ut. But why does this whole game feel like you're swimming in dark soup even on a very good lcd monitor? What's up with the dark textures and the really dark models? The contrast in the screenshots were fabrications and touch ups, had to be because the game doesn't look that great by any stretch nor does it have any of those colors and lighting.

I know it's a beta demo and I know there will be brighter maps but my initial impression visually is very underwhelming. The lag is increadible due to no dedicated servers atm so I'll forgive that. The ingame gamespy browswer sucks but so did the original ut2004 demo's so they make make that better before final release.

And once again, huge console menus that make you scroll a bunch. GG Epic.

The gameplay overall, maybe acceptable, I just can't tell yet because of lag on servers. In single player it's ok, something feels off, besides it being different, just off. I'll give that more time.

I can say it's nothing like Team Fortress 2 which looks great and is just crazy fun from the get go.

I'm not giving up on it but sheesh.

Any other reactions?

My initial reaction is about the same as Non's... Meh.

It's ok, has potential. Movement and speed are pretty good.

I agree that it felt dark and muddy; lacked that "crisp" feel that other UT games had... I felt that making a twitch shot was nearly impossible.

Shock is great; sniper is HORRIBLE. :?

I dunno... I'll play it a bit more, and keep in mind that this is just a beta, but I too am a bit underwhelmed.

I actually think the movement is horrible.

Does anyone else think getting off headshots is way too easy, like in '99?

Other than that, I think the demo is great, and it'll just take some time getting used to the movement and not being able to pull off combos in less than a second :P

ok so I got to play it a bit more today and I like it a lot. The bio was so lime green and gay in the old game this one is like bio mixed with explosive dark water and I like it a lot more. I remember the last few UT's before patches and tweaks and the game play was much worse then this right off the bat. I dont get the scoreboard screen ending and how people are saying things but I will figure that out. I just played on a mapo with the war of the worlds walker on it and this dude was shreading people with it. Plus it makes those scarry noises, pretty cool. Hopefully we can get in a server together somewhere tonight.

agreed...the walking/running seems to be faster at tymes...like when u move forward, u accelerate fast...ANY AND ALL DODGING in absolutely LAME...

i kno im on an older system, and im sure thats y, but i personally think the graphics were not all that impressive either...except for the bio...thats kool!!

i 2 am unimpressed...older komp, yes...not running it on direct-X 10, i kno...but it seems that they dumbed down the gameplay 2 much...and i definetly get the feel that it was originally intended for the konsoles, and that the PC people were added as an afterthought....deadly said it best on TS i think...i believe his exact words were 'its a different game at this point, not the UT we are used to'...

true...it is a demo...BUT, there needs to be some serious updates and changes made IMO...
