cool site for computer diagnostics

Postby Houdini » Tue Nov 28, 2006 10:30 pm

I have been having some crazy packet loss/ ping issues for awhile now and have been dealing with it. Recently being pwned and worse by everyone has sent me over the edge so I made the 2 hour tech call to Time Warner and it seems my modem has a high flap rate and that somehow makes it broken. To see what the problem was I was told to use http://testmy.net/ to check download speeds. I think it may be usefull to check it out and see where you stack up to your areas average rates.

I use Time Warner too. So after you ran this test, what did you do to optimize it and did it help?

went to internet options and cleaned up the temp files, went to security tab and restored all to defaults and same with advanced tab. Turned the Xp firewall off. That gave me a slight boost. Then they swaped out my modem for a new one and I am about to see what if any difference that made.

*UPDATE

ok so after I hooked up the modem I ran the test again and I had
1800 Kbps or 1.8 Mbps which was better but still sucked. So I tryed a link from the testing site and went to http://www.cablenut.com/ I used their free program which does work for XP even though the latest option you have to choose when the program loads is win 2000. So I opened the program and laoded there file to tweak my registry a bit and now I tested at this: 6224 Kbps or 6.2 Mbps (760 kB/s) which is awesome. I guess it was a registry issue. I pay for premium cable service so this speed is right on. I highly recommend checking out cable nut's site and would help anyone with questions on how to use the program.

Just remember that latency affects online gaming like fps more than download speeds. I have dsl and my connect with it is only about 300kbs on a good day but my pings are usually rock solid and down in the 30-40 range. Obviously distance plays a factor along with how many hops you have but don't get all caught up in the download speeds as far as how relative that is to your gaming experience.

I had 4mps with comcast but my ping was 90ish and it would jump to the 300s often.

I too will have to check this out. I did a test on speedguide.net to take a look at what I have now.

The site tells me that these tests are done on the slowest route to the sever. I decided to use a TX location. Pretty good results as it is considering the long distance from me and the server...

"Web-based speed tests are just an estimate of the slowest link between you and the test server."

« SpeedGuide.net Speed Test Results »
4765 kbps down (~4.77 Mbps, 582 KB/s)↓
363 kbps up (~0.36 Mbps, 44 KB/s)↑
3072 KB downloaded in 5.281 seconds
1024 KB uploaded in 23.078 seconds
Speed @ 130% of the average for new.res.rr.com
90 times faster than 56k dialup

This done with trillian, kerio firewall and two fire fox windows running. There are two PCs on my router and I know the second user was browsing the intarwebs during this test. A second test still showed I was @ 120% of the average.
"Of all the moments in my life, you were always there somewhere. Once as a wish. Once as a blessing. And now as the greatest loss I'll ever experience."
