Ace's Mini Review (after about 30 minutes playing with it):

Single Player: It's Doom3.25. After putting not even a half hour into it, I'm already bored. Same exact game style as Doom3, open door, kill bad guys that come charging at you while all you have to do is back-up. Sometimes for variation, big surprise here, the rooms go dark and things pop out. Granted I didn't see the super cool bad guys, but there is absolutely no improvement here.

Multi Player: Not bots, surprise surprise, because ID has no concept of AI, is my guess. Does remind me a lot of Quake 3, they decided to stick with the gay colored icons of your guns in your HUD....nice touch. The guns are all boring. Never was into Quake 3 at all, but my impression all they did was update the skins and textures.

I'm sure tons of people will migrate over to it. Hell, if the CPL did Pain Killer which I thought was one of the biggest pieces of crap I'd ever seen, there's no doubt whatever I'm missing will love this game.

Bottom line, not a chance in hell would I pay $50 for this game, I'd say $20 tops. Single player, if you have the mental capacity of a slug, you'd might be able to sit through it once (for the record I threw in the towel on Doom 3, I couldn't take it anymore...30 minutes into this one it feels the exact same), but even the slug wouldn't play it twice. Multi, moves slow, same weapons, same kick ass weapon icons, update graphics you be the judge....

There's no way I'd ever choose Quake 4 over UT as long as a single person is left in UT2K online (and even if the last person left was Jeta...and I'd still pick UT).

Single player was actually just fine for quake 4. I'm a half hour in and it has good feelings reminicent of quake 2. So far single player is pretty fun. Multiplayer blows. It's actually got less features than quake 3.

Response to Ace's comments...

Ace you seem to equate mental agility with not liking quake 4? That's just funny. So if you have ever sat back and enjoyed some entertainment, which pc gaming is, that was say just nothing but low brow stuff like dumb and dumber, old school, (fill in the blank almost any comedy), and laughed or had a good time does that mean you have the mental capacity of a slug?

Entertainment is subjective. What YOU enjoy, many others would laugh at and call you an idiot.... why be an idiot yourself by doing the same?

If you try to realize this you may actually stop being such a negative nancy all the time and sleep a little better at night because your world will have less negative energy. 8)

Love,

nonstop.

I see differences in that analogy, whether it's only in my screwed up head or not. In the case of movies, just like games there are some really bad ones out there. Old School, love that movie, it's silly and does nothing to promote mental grow. So, why do I like it? Reason, there aren't 10 movies out there just like Old School only on different campuses.

In this day an age with the computer horsepower, it pisses me off that the game play is so horrible. I can only open a door to a room, shoot guys charging directly at me, while only having to backup, for so long before I get bored.

10 years ago (if not more), Wing Command III came out. The previous WC's did have cut scenes, but in III they used real actors and it was beautifully done, great story, but most of all it was interesting to play. Gameplay, in most of the missions depending how you did, the storyline would adjust to what you did (granted not much, but there was some variation). Don't stop the attack on your carrier, your carrier gets damaged and has to move out of the system. The missions themselves, each one much different then the previous one. Sometimes escort type stuff, sometimes scramble defense, etc. Spin off of WC, was Privateer. This game was very dynamic where you could try to follow the storyline, or you could dump the storyline and become the bandit of the galaxy.

10 years later I'm still opening doors, standing still to shoot the guys coming straight at me, then repeating the same thing 200 times in a game, that's slug material. Graphics improving, that's great, but the games 10 years ago have the same if not more ability to make the game different each time you play it.

Take the UT storyline. I could play that story over and over and not one game would be the same. The bots are limited and fall for the same tricks, but I'd never open a door an always find them in the same spot. Falling for the same tricks and having the same fighting style, that's a limit of how they were programed. In the case of DoomQuake, I open the door, the same exact thing will happen every time. Increasing the difficult only adds more enemies, in UT the bots act like a better player. The fact that UT's bots "think" and react, that makes the game so much more playable and for longer.

If they remade Old School in ultra hi def with 7.1 doby sound, I wouldn't go see it. Why? Same movie I watched in 2003.

Well... In Ace's defense, there IS a 98.7% correlation rate between someone being a CS player and a complete asshat. (With a +/-1.3% allowing for error and standard deviation).

There must be some basis between game choice and mental capacity.

Dude on the left (no my pic), was from what I hear THE Quake player:

Played against him in a UT CTF tourney and Trin and I knocked him out. Not that it means anything, but anybody who keeps with the mullet in this day and age....you have to wonder :)

Good points ace. Can't disagree with the gameplay vs updated engine argument. That's why I still like games like civilization and hereos of might and magic. Horrid graphics but great gameplay.

The thing I have learned over the yrs though is you can't explain away your enjoyment of something that is sensless like Old School. Have you ever tried to explain 'why' it's funny to someone who doesn't enjoy comedy? If not, try it and all will become clear.

So much of life is subjective and you can't use empirical evidence to sway because it's tissue based or better yet, it's something below the cerebral cortex. You like it .... because you like it. Others can call you stupid because you like it but didn't we finish hanging witches for being different around the late 1800's? Well, I guess not because the Bush administration has been on a witch hunt for all non believers....

Anywho, downloading doom and quake on my modem from a bbs was a huge event. Nothing was like that back then. Now it's been done too much and it's stale and old but for some reason the series has a little value for me because it's more of an ode to the past as it conjurs up good memories. Have you ever noticed how something that holds a special memory gets more sympathy than something your not attached to? For me I'm not just playing a mindless game, which it definately is, I'm roaming down cooridoors of the past shooting reminiscient phantoms of the past.....

My love knows no bounds, so not only will I sum it up for you Jeta, I'll write it so you can understand:

See Beernut ask "Does anybody like Quake 4"?

See Ace reply "Ace does not like Quake 4".

See Nonstop reply "Quake 4 not that bad".

Beernut, Ace, and Nonstop live happily ever after.

THE END

World War III will be fought using atomic weapons, the war after that will be fought using sticks and stones.
