microsoft gives software security makers access to windows kernel in 64-bit version of vista?!?!? WTF?!?!?!?!?
http://www.neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=35595
seriously, the more i learn about vista the more i disklike it. not allowing kernel access was a huge step in the right direction, even if it was in the 64 bit version. symantec and mcafee just needed to get off their lazy asses.
kudos to microsoft for not allowing kernel access. shame on them for cowering to software security vendors.

kernel access lockdown is just a way to bandaid a problem. Its not a wrong or right direction. The point is the kernel should have appropriate controls in place around APIs to the kernel (what they can do) and who can use them at any given point. Some of the most secure OSes in the word including NSA certified allow kernel API access under the right conditions.
Its not a yes or no question. Its Microsoft testing the waters to see how far they can push the industry on the litigation front. Don't forget McAfee and Norton are now direct competitors to MS.

Here is a post bari made at acdc. Sounds like sli and xfire are out and it sounds like even more pains in the arss are on the way. I predict it all backfires and by sp1 they have to do some major rethinking.

I spent yesterday morning cleaning out two years worth of sludge and rust, and I did the ribs to make sure it still worked
Tomorrow night I'm grilling rib-eye's as we enter the time of year where I can go outside without becomming a puddle of sweat
Boy do I have a great recipe for you then if you do ribs on the gas grill.

My ribs have already been described as being 'better than sex'
(and not by the lovely Mrs. Law, Mr. smarty pants) but if you think you've got something better I'll give it a try.
Ok, in case someone wants to rant more about vista I'll start another thread.

More confirmation that MS is acting less like a tech company and more like a hollywood studio.
If anything could be calculated to drive the DIY community away from Windows, this would be it. As it stands now, reactivating after installing a new motherboard is a minor pain, but not a big deal. And what about when you need to swap out a motherboard simply because the hardware failed? Does that count as well?
Dwight Silverman, one of the writers for the interviewed Shanen Boettcher of Microsoft about this topic. According to Silverman, Boettcher is "very aware of the concerns over the licensing terms."
Silverman also noted that Boetther said that Microsoft "doesn't plan to back away."

As half of India already knows, I *hate* activation.
However, as a Software Developer, my bread and butter comes from 'legal software sales' (not that anyone would be pirating the stuff I'm writing...enterprise level stuff) In that respect I understand MS is just trying to make sure they get paid.
FWIW, the Indians have always backed down when I've had trouble activating....Though the last time they did ask lots of questions. "Where did you get this software?" "Why are you re-installing?" I keep reminding them "If I was stealing it, I'd have a volume license, and not be on the phone with you now"
